The first airline to adopt this cutting-edge technology will be Air New Zealand, a long-time ATR partner, which will introduce Starlink connectivity to its domestic flights starting in 2025.
This innovation was made possible through a collaboration with PMV Engineering, which developed the modifications necessary for Starlink's certification on ATR aircraft. The solution is now available as a retrofit option for ATR 72-500 and ATR 72-600 operators globally through a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC).
Starlink, engineered by SpaceX, boasts the world’s largest satellite constellation operating in low-Earth orbit. It delivers high-speed broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls, and other data-intensive applications. This game-changing technology ensures passengers can enjoy a seamless internet experience, akin to what they have at home.

While passengers will enjoy streaming and browsing at 30,000 feet, the Starlink system also benefits flight crews. Pilots can access real-time aviation weather services, enhancing flight safety through better decision-making. Additionally, the system's compact antenna design complements ATR aircraft aerodynamics, ensuring optimal performance without compromising efficiency.
ATR expects significant interest in this connectivity solution, particularly in markets such as Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the United States, where demand for in-flight connectivity is rapidly growing. This addition complements ATR's existing HighLine collection, which includes USB sockets at all seats, In-Flight Entertainment systems, and other high-end cabin solutions.
