ATR partnered with Starlink to Bring High -Speed Internet to the Skies


 Toulouse, 21 January 2025 – ATR, the global leader in regional aircraft manufacturing, has announced a groundbreaking milestone in air travel: the integration of high-speed Starlink internet connectivity on its ATR 72 aircraft. Following successful test flights on the ATR 72-600 test aircraft, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has certified this innovative solution, marking a new era for regional aviation.

The first airline to adopt this cutting-edge technology will be Air New Zealand, a long-time ATR partner, which will introduce Starlink connectivity to its domestic flights starting in 2025.

This innovation was made possible through a collaboration with PMV Engineering, which developed the modifications necessary for Starlink's certification on ATR aircraft. The solution is now available as a retrofit option for ATR 72-500 and ATR 72-600 operators globally through a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC).

Starlink, engineered by SpaceX, boasts the world’s largest satellite constellation operating in low-Earth orbit. It delivers high-speed broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls, and other data-intensive applications. This game-changing technology ensures passengers can enjoy a seamless internet experience, akin to what they have at home.

Nikhil Ravishankar, Chief Digital Officer at Air New Zealand, expressed excitement about the partnership:

Whether traveling for work or leisure, we know seamless connectivity will transform the travel experience for customers. We can’t wait to bring this to our domestic flights.”

Eric Sperazza, CEO of PMV Engineering, highlighted the significance of this achievement:

 “We’re honored to provide such revolutionary technology onboard ATR aircraft. Our solution-led approach has created new opportunities for ATR and its customers, enhancing the travel experience.”

Daniel Cuchet, Senior Vice President of Engineering at ATR, emphasized the broader implications:

 “Starlink opens a new era for ATR, offering unparalleled levels of comfort and passenger experience in the regional market. This achievement showcases our commitment to innovation and collaboration with industry-leading partners.”

While passengers will enjoy streaming and browsing at 30,000 feet, the Starlink system also benefits flight crews. Pilots can access real-time aviation weather services, enhancing flight safety through better decision-making. Additionally, the system's compact antenna design complements ATR aircraft aerodynamics, ensuring optimal performance without compromising efficiency.

ATR expects significant interest in this connectivity solution, particularly in markets such as Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the United States, where demand for in-flight connectivity is rapidly growing. This addition complements ATR's existing HighLine collection, which includes USB sockets at all seats, In-Flight Entertainment systems, and other high-end cabin solutions.

NTSB Released Preliminary Report on Mid-Air Collision Between American Airlines Jet and US Military Helicopter

 The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its preliminary report regarding the tragic midair collision that occurred between US Army Helicopter and American Airline Jet (Bombardier - CRJ700) .  On January 29, 2025, about 2048 eastern standard time (EST), a Sikorsky UH-60L, operated by the US Army under the callsign PAT25, and an MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) RJ Aviation (formerly Bombardier) CL-600-2C10 (CRJ700), N709PS, operated by PSA Airlines as flight 5342, collided in flight approximately 0.5 miles southeast of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Arlington, Virginia, and impacted the Potomac River in southwest Washington, District of Columbia. The 2 pilots, 2 flight attendants, and 60 passengers aboard the airplane and all 3 crew members aboard the helicopter were fatally injured. Both aircraft were destroyed as a result of the accident.
